Two models

Two models. One writing partner.

Most AI writing tools give you one model and quietly refuse the scenes that matter. Muze Writer gives you two, and tells you plainly which one you are writing with.

Muse Standard Model

The default, and the right choice for most manuscripts. It writes with the same knowledge of your premise, characters, voice, and outline as everything else in Muze Writer.

Muse Unfiltered Model

For fiction that goes to hard places: violence and its consequences, cruelty, addiction, grief, despair, bigotry voiced by the characters who hold it, and sexual content between adults. It does not sanitise, and it does not lecture you.

You choose, per manuscript

The model is a property of the book, not a hidden setting. Set it when you create a manuscript or change it later. Your other manuscripts are unaffected.

Why a second model exists at all

Serious fiction goes to places a general-purpose assistant will not follow. A novel about addiction has to be honest about the drug. A war novel has to be honest about what a body does when it is hit. A book about a bigot has to let the bigot talk. Ask most AI writing tools for those scenes and you get a refusal, a lecture, or worse: a version with the truth sanded off, handed back as if nothing happened.

That last failure is the one that wastes your afternoon. You do not find out the model declined. You find out three paragraphs later that the scene has no teeth and you cannot work out why.

So Muze Writer splits the difference honestly. The Muse Standard Model is the default and handles the overwhelming majority of fiction. The Muse Unfiltered Model exists for the rest, and you always know which one you are working with.

What the Muse Unfiltered Model actually does

It writes difficult material as literature, at the level of craft the rest of the book is written at. Depicting is not endorsing: a character can hold a repugnant view and the prose does not have to agree with them. That distinction is the whole of adult fiction, and it is the distinction a content filter cannot make.

It is not a jailbreak and it is not a different product. It reads the same Story Core as the Standard model, keeps the same version history, and answers to the same voice you set. The only difference is that it will not quietly refuse you.

There are limits, and they are absolute. Every character depicted in a sexual context is an adult. Nothing in Muze Writer will write sexual content involving minors, and nothing will produce material that provides real operational instructions for serious harm. Those are not filters that a setting relaxes; they are lines the product does not cross.

How to switch

Every manuscript carries a content rating. When you create one, pick Standard or Unfiltered on the details step. You can change it later in the manuscript's settings, and the Muse follows the book.

The Muse Unfiltered Model is included with the Founding and Writer plans and requires you to confirm you are 18 or over. The free tier writes with the Muse Standard Model. See Pricing for what each plan includes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the Muse Standard Model and the Muse Unfiltered Model?

The Muse Standard Model is the default and writes most fiction well. The Muse Unfiltered Model writes material the Standard model softens or declines: violence and its consequences, cruelty, addiction, grief, bigotry voiced by the characters who hold it, profanity, and sexual content between adults. Both read your premise, characters, voice, and outline the same way.

Is the Muse Unfiltered Model just an AI with the safety turned off?

No. It is a model whose terms permit adult fiction, instructed to treat difficult material as literature rather than refuse it. The hard limits do not move: every character depicted in a sexual context is an adult, and nothing will write sexual content involving minors or give real instructions for serious harm.

Do I have to use the Muse Unfiltered Model?

No. Standard is the default and most writers never change it. The rating is set per manuscript, so choosing Unfiltered for one book leaves every other book exactly as it was.

Who can use the Muse Unfiltered Model?

Writers aged 18 or over, on the Founding or Writer plan. You confirm your age once. The free tier writes with the Muse Standard Model.

Will the Muse Unfiltered Model write anything I ask?

No, and that is deliberate. It will not write sexual content involving minors, and it will not produce real operational instructions for serious harm, whatever the framing. Those limits are absolute and are not a setting.

Does the Muse Unfiltered Model change how well the Muse knows my book?

No. Both models read the same Story Core, follow the same voice, and write into the same manuscript with the same version history. The only difference is what they are willing to write.
